Busy as I am on my computer today at work I accidentally clicked my “favorites” tab and opened the “Daily Bible Readings” webpage I book marked over lent. Ready to simply close the tab a phrase caught my eye… “So Submit yourselves to God. Resist the Devil, and he will flee from you.”
A very simple concept yes, but in reading these two phrases I was instantly brought back to my junior year of college at the University of St. Thomas where I had the blessing to play Sarah Brown in our collegiate rendition of “Guys & Dolls.”

The opening line of the show is…
“Brothers and sisters, resist the Devil and he will flee from you. That is what the Bible tells us… Repent before it is too late!” Read more
Anyone who knows me personally knows I am far from a bible-banger and not one to “cast the first stone” as it will, but seeing this brief reminder of my faith made me realize that I should be paying more attention. I really like today’s reading and feel as though it speaks to every heart hurting or struggling.
Make room for your faith in your life, take a moment to be thankful everyday for the blessings you have and seek guidance for those issues you are struggling with. I have often said that I can not hear what He is trying to tell me, but clearly I need to open my eyes to His message.

“Soldier”
Where did all the people go?
They got scared when the lights went low.
I’ll get you through it nice and slow,
When the world’s spinning out of control.
Afraid of what they might lose
Might get scraped or they might get bruised.
You could beg them, what’s the use?
That’s why it’s called a moment of truth
I’ll get it if you need it,
I’ll search if you don’t see it,
You’re thirsty, I’ll be rain,
You get hurt, I’ll take your pain.
I know you don’t believe it,
But I said it and I still mean it,
When you heard what I told you,
When you get worried I’ll be your soldier.
Funny when times get hard,
At the last moment when you’re supposed to charge,
Always on the longest yard,
Oh, they feel their feet getting cold.
Hiding here, hiding there,
Find them underneath the stairs,
People hiding everywhere,
Trying to be still like a stone.
I’ll get it if you need it,
I’ll search if you can’t see it,
You’re thirsty, I’ll be rain,
You get hurt, I’ll take your pain.
I know you don’t believe it,
But I said it and I still mean it,
When you heard what I told you,
When you get worried I’ll be your soldier.
My aim is so true,
I wanna show you,
I’ll try forever,
I’m never gonna say “surrender”.
I’ll get it if you need it,
I’ll search if you can’t see it,
You’re thirsty, I’ll be rain,
You get hurt, I’ll take your pain.
I know you don’t believe it,
But I said it and I still mean it,
When you heard what I told you,
When you get worried I’ll be your soldier.
I’ll be your soldier
Well I’ll be, oh I’ll be your soldier
I’ll be your soldier
I’ll be your soldier
Today’s #AshWednesday Gospel is one of my all-time favorite in the bible. Here Jesus explains to the disciples what it means to give alms, pray and fast. He speaks of how the Father will repay what you do in secret and how one should act during this lenten season of repentance. I believe that it is important to be conservative with your faith and how you express your faith so that you act with sincerity and not as an individual seeking attention and praise for your spiritual practices.
Gospel Mt 6:1-6, 16-18
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Take care not to perform righteous deeds
in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
When you give alms,
do not blow a trumpet before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets
to win the praise of others.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you give alms,
do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.”
“When you pray,
do not be like the hypocrites,
who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners
so that others may see them.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room,
close the door, and pray to your Father in secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.”
“When you fast,
do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.
They neglect their appearance,
so that they may appear to others to be fasting.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast,
anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to be fasting,
except to your Father who is hidden.
And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”

Lent is a penitential season, a time to “turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” (Mark 1:15). The season lasts for 40 days, the same amount of time Jesus spent in prayer and fasting in the desert.
Friends I realize many of you are not Catholic, but I found this detailed description of what Lent is all about very informative.
